From East Bengal to Pune Pioneers FC: Former I-League Goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh Takes Up New Coaching Challenge

Former East Bengal goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh, who was part of the club’s Federation Cup and Calcutta Football League-winning squads, has joined Pune Pioneers FC as Goalkeeping Coach.

Indian football has a long tradition of producing players who go on to contribute to the game beyond their playing careers. Former professional goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh is now entering another important phase of his football journey, having joined Pune Pioneers Football Club as the organisation’s new Goalkeeping Coach.

For Ghosh, the appointment brings together years of experience gained across some of India’s established football clubs and a coaching career dedicated to developing one of the most specialised positions on the pitch.

His playing career included stints with East Bengal FC, Air India FC, Mumbai Tigers, Sreebhumi Samiti and Royal Wahingdoh FC. However, his association with East Bengal remains one of the defining chapters of his professional journey.

Part of a successful East Bengal generation

Ghosh represented East Bengal during the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons, a period that included several important domestic achievements for the Kolkata-based club.

He was part of the East Bengal squad that won the Federation Cup in the 2009–10 season and the Calcutta Football League Premier Division title in 2010. He was also part of the squad that finished as Durand Cup runners-up in 2009.

His time at East Bengal also provided exposure to continental competition, with participation in the AFC Cup in 2010.

Playing for a club with East Bengal’s history and expectations meant competing in an environment where performance, consistency and the ability to handle pressure were essential. The experience formed an important part of Ghosh’s understanding of professional football.

Before joining East Bengal, he had already developed his game through the Tata Football Academy, where he spent four years between 2003 and 2007. The academy provided the foundation for his progression into senior professional football.

Following his time in Kolkata, Ghosh joined Air India FC, competing in the I-League during the 2011–12 season. He subsequently represented Mumbai Tigers in the I-League Second Division and was part of the squad that finished as Durand Cup runners-up.

His playing career continued with Sreebhumi Samiti, where he competed in the Calcutta Football League Premier Division and I-League Second Division, before a spell at Aryan FC.

Another significant chapter came with Royal Wahingdoh FC. Ghosh was part of the squad that finished third in the 2014–15 I-League, a strong campaign for the Shillong-based club.

A strong foundation at youth level

Ghosh’s football development began well before his professional career.

At youth level, he represented Bengal in national competitions and was part of the state teams that won the U-16 National Championship in 2002 and the U-19 Dr B.C. Roy Trophy in 2006.

His development also involved international exposure. In 2005, he travelled with Tata Football Academy on an international tour to England, where the team won the Wells Cup. In 2006, he was involved with the India U-19 setup and participated in a camp and tour to Sri Lanka.

During his playing career, Ghosh also had the opportunity to work under several respected coaches in Indian football, including Subhash Bhowmick, Bimal Ghosh, Santosh Kashyap, Godfrey Pereira and Philippe De Ridder.

These experiences across youth and senior football have provided him with an understanding of the demands placed on players at different stages of their development.

From professional goalkeeper to specialist coach

After his playing career, Ghosh moved into coaching, choosing to focus on the technical and tactical requirements of goalkeeper development.

He began his coaching journey with the Hooghly District Sports Association in 2017–18 and subsequently worked with the Kalyani Football League. His coaching experience has since included Kolkata Soccer Academy, Suruchi Sangha, Khidderpore SC, Kalighat MS, City AC, George Telegraph FC and SKM Sports Foundation.

These assignments have exposed him to different levels of the Indian football structure, including the Calcutta Football League, Reliance Development League and AIFF U-17 Youth League.

Ghosh holds an AIFF C Coaching Licence and brings nearly a decade of specialist goalkeeping coaching experience into his new role.

A new chapter with Pune Pioneers FC

At Pune Pioneers FC, Ghosh will oversee goalkeepers across every age group in both the residential and non-residential academy programmes.

The appointment is particularly significant for a club seeking to create a structured development environment in which players receive position-specific coaching. Goalkeepers require a different training methodology from outfield players, with particular emphasis on positioning, handling, footwork, distribution, communication and decision-making.

Having a dedicated coach responsible for goalkeepers throughout the academy allows the club to build greater consistency in their development.

Ghosh’s initial sessions at Pune Pioneers FC have been positively received by the players, while fellow coaches have also observed encouraging improvements in the goalkeepers’ work.

His move to Pune is also a considerable personal commitment. His wife and young child remain in Kolkata while he begins this new professional chapter, a decision that reflects his belief in the opportunity and the potential of the Pune Pioneers FC project.

Interestingly, Pune Pioneers FC Club Director Ryan Roy Shah and Ghosh had previously crossed paths at Mumbai Tigers during the 2012–13 season, when Ghosh was in the senior squad and Shah was part of the youth setup.

For Pune Pioneers FC, the appointment represents an opportunity to bring professional playing experience into its goalkeeper development structure. For Ghosh, it marks the beginning of a new challenge: helping the next generation of Indian goalkeepers develop the qualities required to progress in the modern game.
