Sri Lanka reach 265/8 at stumps, trail India by 238 runs
Sri Lanka closed Day 3 of the second Test at 265/8, still trailing India by 238 runs, after rain and bad light forced an early end to play in Colombo.
Rain and bad light forced an early end to Day 3 of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo, with the hosts closing on 265 for 8.
Sri Lanka still trail India by 238 runs after 83.4 overs of resistance through the day.
Debutant Pasindu Sooriyabandara anchored the innings with a patient 80 off 133 balls, playing a key role in Sri Lanka’s fightback.
Sooriyabandara anchored the innings with a patient knock, combining with Kamindu Mendis in an 87-run stand before the partnership was finally broken just before lunch.
Sonal Dinusha played a counter-attacking innings lower down the order, registering his third consecutive fifty-plus score in the series.
Useful contributions from Keshara Nuwantha and Lahiru Kumara in the tail helped Sri Lanka clear the follow-on mark before bad light and rain brought an early end to the day’s play.
With the second new ball due, India will be eager to wrap up Sri Lanka’s remaining two wickets quickly when play resumes, aiming to force an innings advantage.
The match, being played at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, is the second Test of the series, with India already holding a 1-0 lead following their win in the series opener at Galle.

Pasindu Sooriyabandara hits maiden Test fifty on Day 3 in Colombo
Sri Lanka’s Pasindu Sooriyabandara struck an unbeaten 65 to reach his maiden Test half-century on Day 3 of the second Test against India in Colombo.
Sri Lanka’s Pasindu Sooriyabandara struck his maiden Test half-century on Day 3 of the second Test against India at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo.
Sooriyabandara reached fifty with a single off Ravindra Jadeja, going on to remain unbeaten on 65 off 93 balls with 9 fours at lunch.
It is only his second Test appearance. He made his debut as a concussion substitute for Dinesh Chandimal during the first Test in Galle on August 18, after Chandimal was ruled out with a neck and shoulder injury sustained while fielding.
That debut made Sooriyabandara only the fifth player in Test cricket history to win his maiden cap as a substitute, following Brian Mudzinganyama, Khaya Zondo, Matt Parkinson and Bahir Shah.
India had earlier declared their first innings at 503 for 9, built around a maiden Test century in Sri Lanka from Dhruv Jurel, before reducing the hosts to 130 for 4 at lunch through two breakthroughs from Prasidh Krishna.
Sooriyabandara’s composed knock has helped steady Sri Lanka’s innings after the early loss of wickets, with the match evenly poised heading into the afternoon session.
His first-class record coming into the series stood at 4,893 runs from 68 matches at an average of 54.36, including 14 centuries and 23 half-centuries, reflecting a consistent domestic batting record before his international call-up.
The concussion substitute rule allows a like-for-like replacement to be brought into a Test match when a player is ruled out due to a head or neck injury, subject to approval from the match referee.
India go into this Test holding a 1-0 series lead after their win in the series opener at Galle, meaning a strong showing from Sri Lanka’s middle order is important to keep the contest alive.
His composed batting on Day 3 has been seen as a promising sign for Sri Lanka’s middle order depth, coming as it did under pressure after early wickets fell.

Chelsea beat Fulham 3-2 in Xabi Alonso’s winning managerial debut
Chelsea began the Premier League season with a 3-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage, marking a winning start to Xabi Alonso’s reign as manager.
Chelsea began their Premier League campaign with a 3-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage, marking a winning start to Xabi Alonso’s reign as manager.
Joao Pedro opened the scoring for Chelsea inside the first minute, before Josh King equalised for Fulham in the 23rd minute.
Morgan Rogers put Chelsea back ahead on his debut in the 41st minute, and Cole Palmer extended the lead early in the second half in the 49th minute.
Gonzalo Garcia pulled a goal back for Fulham in the 54th minute, but the hosts were unable to find a leveller as Chelsea held on for the win.
Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was at fault for Fulham’s first goal and also parried a shot into the path of Garcia for the second, with uncertain distribution troubling Chelsea through parts of the match.
Speaking after the match, Alonso kept his response brief and measured: “The first goal we can do better than that. But it’s a process, it’s day 1.”
The match marked Alonso’s first competitive fixture in charge of Chelsea, following his move to English football after a managerial career largely built on the continent.
Morgan Rogers’ goal on debut gave Chelsea fans an early glimpse of a new attacking option, while Cole Palmer’s finish continued his run of involvement in the team’s goals this season.
The result gives Chelsea a winning start to their league campaign, though the defensive uncertainty around Sanchez is likely to draw scrutiny as the season progresses.
Fulham, despite the loss, showed resilience with their second-half fightback, and will look to build on that response in their next fixture.
The West London derby has historically produced tightly contested matches between the two clubs, and this latest meeting added to that competitive history with five goals across the 90 minutes.
Chelsea’s front three, refreshed under Alonso’s early tactical setup, looked lively for large stretches of the match, even as questions remained over the balance between attack and defence.
